Select a military-friendly online school that allows you to put your military schedule first, and you can begin your civilian career with credentials that enhance your military background.

When you are ready to begin your civilian job search, knowing how to translate military jargon concerning your rank and duties is key – especially if you are going to convince a prospective employer that you are the right candidate for the job. The Transition Assistance Program (TAP) offers valuable guidance on how to accomplish this task. Here are some examples directly from the TAP Manual:

Translating Your Military Strengths

1. Leadership Training
The military trains people to accept responsibility and give direction. You may have had responsibility for other people and their activities. You are trained to lead by setting an example and by giving directions.

2. Ability to Conform to Rules and Structure
In any organization there must be rules and structure to avoid chaos. You have learned and followed rules in the service. Companies value employees who will follow the rules and fit into the structure of the workplace.

3. Ability to Learn with Advanced Training
You received intensive, and often specialized, advanced training in the service.

4. Familiarity with Records
You are familiar with the need for records and complete paperwork. You understand the need to be accountable for everything you do.

5. Ability to Work as a Team Member and a Team Leader
In the military you worked in a team environment. You understand that everything you do affects someone else. You may have served as a team leader where you analyzed
situations and options, made decisions, gave directions, followed through and
accepted responsibility.

6. Ability to Work in a Diverse Group
The military employs all Americans regardless of race, gender, economic status, religion. In the service, you have worked with people of all backgrounds, attitudes, and characteristics.

7. Ability to Work Under Pressure and Meet Deadlines
In the military you must perform. You do your job right the first time. There is pressure and stress; if you fail, people could suffer. This attitude toward work is valued in the business community.

8. Systematic Planning
Most military operations require thorough planning. You must consider objectives, the strengths and limitations of others, resources, time schedules, logistics, and various other factors. You also assess progress during the operations. The ability to plan is highly valued in many civilian job settings.

Air Force ROTC is a program that prepares you to become an Air Force officer. It’s a challenge. It’s an opportunity. • Social and extracurricular activities together with leadership and academic training The detachment sponsors a Civil Air
• Can obtain front-seat and back-seat flying time in Cessna aircraft for a small fee.
• Social outlets for the cadets such as, Drill team, honor guard, Arnold Air Honor Society, Angels Service Organization, and Officer Christian Fellowship are just a few.
• Summer opportunities for cadets can include a visit to a military installation for 10 days, free fall parachuting and soaring at the United States Air Force Academy, Flight Nurse shadowing, and cadet training officers duty at field training.

These military academies are part of the Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) program, and are partly funded by the United States Department of Defense. Chicago with six academies has more than any other city, a third of all in the country.[1]

The Army Education Benefits also has a program to help pay for past college. If soldiers have accumulated student loans, they can have these paid partially or completely, if their loans qualify. For an active duty soldier, qualified loans are eligible for $65,000 and reserve soldiers are eligible for $40,000. This can help those soldiers who are struggling with the burden of paying off the debt of higher education.

The Post 9/11 GI Bill is for any soldier who has served more than ninety days on active duty since September 2001. This bill provides 36 months of educational benefits to the soldier. The unique thing about this program is that it covers the cost of tuition, books, supplies and living expenses. It can also be transferred to the soldier’s spouse or children.

Many soldiers use the Montgomery GI Bill or the Army College Fund. This is a fund that the soldier needs to contribute to while serving in the Army. The soldier has $100 taken out of their monthly pay. Depending on the length of their enlistment, soldiers will qualify for up to $83,448 for college and expenses. This is a good investment for their education.

The army education benefits are also for those that are on active duty. Soldiers qualify to further their college education while still wearing their uniform. CONAP is Concurrent Admission Program. The Army and over 1,900 colleges collaborate to further the education of those that are enlisted. College credit can be earned while taking classes. Credit is also given for military courses the soldier has taken for their MOS or leadership courses.

Eligible soldiers can also qualify for 100% funding of up to $4,500 per year through the goarmyed.com program. Here a soldier can further their Army training. They can request tuition assistance (TA) for distance learning, eArmyU online classes and traditional classroom courses. This covers a wide variety of options for the modern soldier to obtain higher education. TA will cover 100% of the cost of college credits up to $250 each.

The education center on any Army base is the hub for soldiers seeking Army Education Benefits. It is at the Ed Center that they can speak with a counselor, sign up for classes and work with satellite schools. Many colleges offer classes right at the Ed Center for soldiers. While these classes are taken at the education center or on post, they are accredited from a qualified college. Other schools offer convenient online courses, which can be completed anywhere the soldier can access an Internet connection. Any credits that are earned are transferable.

The Army educational benefits are why many young men and women enlist. They provide a viable solution to gaining and paying for a college education. After soldiers complete their enlistment, they have money for college, job skills and college credits, and are well on their way to their life goals.

The new vMPF module will check an airman’s eligibility and allow him or her to fill out, sign and send the required statement of understanding to the Automated Records Management System virtually.

Airmen will continue to use the Department of Defense Transfer Education Benefits Web site to complete their application. The vMPF module will simplify the process by allowing airmen to see if they are eligible to apply and to complete their statement of understanding form online.

Airmen who already have submitted their applications using the former process do not need to take any additional action. The new module applies to airmen who have not yet submitted their statements of understanding.

Eligible airmen who access the vMPF module will see an introductory page which provides general guidance and direction for transferring education benefits using the DOD TEB site. The introduction page links to additional Post-9/11 G.I. Bill information as well as to the statement-of-understanding page.

An ineligible airman who accesses the module will see one of several notifications explaining why he or she is ineligible to transfer his or her education benefits. Possible notifications are that an airman has not completed the required six years of service or has not enlisted for a long enough time to apply.

As a result of the thorough evaluation, ordered in 2006 by SOC president Kathy Snead, there is a new Consortium agreement that requires all schools in the network to adhere to basic student rights, including the right to all of the following:

1. Accurate information about a school’s programs, requirements, accreditation, and its potential impact on course transferability.
2. Access basic information and fees without disclosure of the student’s personal information.
3. Educational planning and career guidance without high-pressure registration and enrollment efforts from institutions.
4. A clear and complete explanation of course and program procedures as well as all resulting financial obligations.
5. Explore, without being coerced, all financial aid options before signing up for student loans or other monetary assistance.
6. Accurate scholarship information, free of misleading “scholarship” offers based on military Tuition Assistance (TA).
7. Appropriate academic screening and course placement based on the readiness of the student.
8. Appropriate and accessible academic and student support services.
9. Clearly defined “drop/add” and withdrawal policies and procedures, including information about the impact of military duties (i.e. mobilization, activation, temporary duty assignments) on one’s academic standing and financial responsibilities.
10. Grievance/appeals processes that are clearly defined.

The SOC is an association of well over 1700 colleges and universities created to make sure that all members of the military and their families are given sufficient opportunities to pursue their educational goals. The schools in the network have united together in an effort to make it easier for service members and their families to enroll in college programs by simplifying transfer of credits and reducing residency requirements.

All of the member schools have agreed to provide sufficient access to the range of student services appropriate to support programs including admissions, financial assistance, academic advising, deliver of course materials, competency testing, placement, and counseling.

In addition, assurances will be given that students admitted into college programs possess the necessary knowledge and academic preparation to succeed. And if computers, personal digital assistants, or other equipment is needed to successfully complete a course, SOC institutions will offer help to any student who has difficulty using the technology.

These schools have also agreed to provide adequate, clearly stated means that students can use to resolve any grievances they may have, in particular, transparent due-process procedures associated with tuition and financial aid, course withdrawals due to unexpected deployments, lack of consistent computer connectivity, and changes of duty.

SOC is funded by the Department of Defense (DoD) and coordinated through DANTES. Each year, the association publishes the “SOC Consortium Guide” which provides an array of detailed information, such as each school’s appointed representative, list of programs, and policy for Credit-by-Exam and ACE credits.

The Army Correspondence Course Program (ACCP) is the formal nonresident extension of the United States Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) service schools’ curricula.

When completing Army Distance Learning Program (TADLP) course, module and subcourse examinations, students are required to submit their own work. Students who are suspected of cheating on examinations are subject to Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) Articles 107, 132, and 134.

DA Pamphlet 351-20, The Army Correspondence Course Program Catalog is a standard Army publication. The catalog lists all correspondence courses developed and administered by the Army and select Department of Defense activities. The Army Institute for Professional Development (AIPD) publishes a yearly revision of the catalog each October to update the ACCP curriculum and any procedural changes to the program. The entire ACCP curriculum and an electronic enrollment form are also listed at the Army Training Support Center’s Web site. The ACCP Catalog offers two types of study: individual and group.

AIPD’s automated student record system limits students to one course enrollment, or to one course enrollment and a subcourse enrollment, at any one time. But, this limitation applies only to the courses and subcourses administered by AIPD. Each subcourse is awarded a specific number of credit hours, noted in ACCP Catalog Chapter 3 at the individual subcourse descriptions and usually included on the title page of a subcourse. The number of credit hours for any given subcourse is based on the estimated time required for a student to read the material and complete all practice exercises and the examination. If a subcourse is assigned six credit hours, the author(s) of the subcourse probably timed someone as they read the entire subcourse, performed each practice exercise, then completed the examination. They then rounded this amount of time off to the nearest hour and awarded it as the credit hours for the subcourse.

Provided free of charge by request, the AAARTS is a computerized transcript system that generates official transcripts for qualified soldiers by combining military education and job experience with descriptions and college credit recommendations developed by the American Council on Education (ACE). The following information will be included on the transcript:

• Soldier’s name and Social Security Number (SSN)
• The Soldier’s present rank or highest rank reached while enlisted.
• Military status (whether on active or inactive duty)
• Additional Skill Identifiers (ASI) and Skill Qualification Identifiers (SQI)
• A listing of all formal military courses completed
• Any Military Occupational Specialties (MOS) held
• Scores earned on standardized tests

In addition to saving both time and money, an AARTS transcript provides a description of military schooling and work history in civilian language that can be more easily understood by prospective employers. The transcript serves as a valuable tool which can be used by academic and career counselors in advising soldiers and veterans. It is also a highly effective aid in preparing resumes and translating Army-related work experience during a job interview.

Army/American Council on Education Registry Transcript System (AARTS) transcripts are available to veterans or active duty personnel who are serving or who have served after October 1, 1981. Requests will need your full name, Social Security Number, and dates of service.

Soldiers with an abundance of credit hours from military education, but who still haven’t reached the promotion point cut off score, may want to consider this commonly overlooked option.

In most instances, the military covers all costs associated with obtaining a civilian college degree. And since many colleges offer online courses, it’s easy for members of the Armed Forces to continue taking classes while they are on active duty.

Here are five benefits of earning a college degree online:
1. You can receive up to 100 promotion points (1.5 promotion points for every completed hour of credit)
2. Having a degree, or showing that you are working towards a degree, will make you stand out at the senior NCO promotion boards
