There is a way for soldiers can enjoy the convenience of pursuing their educational goals while earning up to 100 promotion points to enhance their rank.

To Become a SGT, this is what you should do,

Work on raising yourAPFT score.

Visit the Education Center and see if he can get the civilian trade school translated into college credits. At some accumulation college credits count towards promotion points I thought.

Start working towards a college AAS degree at least.

Take the usual correspondence courses.

Ask the 1SGT what is his most pressing problem area with the unit……and have your husband fix it. Or ask the CSM that question and fix it for the BN. Both are good for at least a Letter of Commendation or better.

But, how would you possibly finish earning your college degree while serving in military? Online courses! yes, online courses would be the best solution. In most instances, the military covers all costs associated with obtaining a civilian college degree. And since many colleges offer online courses, it’s easy for members of the Army to continue taking classes while they are on active duty. While earning a college degree can be a time consuming commitment, enrolling in online courses expedites the process since soldiers can study at any time and any place that offers Internet access.

And, not only your tuition is covered, the major benefit of earning a college degree is that you can earn up to 100 promotion points:

You can receive up to 100 promotion points (1.5 promotion points for every completed hour of credit).

Having a degree, or showing that you are working towards a degree, will make you stand out at the senior NCO promotion boards.

A college degree will make you more marketable when you get out of the Army.

The military offers assistance with tuition to help cover the costs affiliated with attending college.

Earning your degree will enable you to meet the Promotion Point cut off, which will serve to advance your rank and lead to a higher pay scale. Study online whenever you want, with an education that is centered around your academic needs. With tuition assistance, you can pay nothing out-of-pocket and prepare for your future.

- Don’t regret your time spent in military duty. Prepare your transition to civilian now before it’s too late to build your career while serving in the military! Below is a new from Reuters why jobless US veterans say military experience was not valued.

Jobless Veterans?

Jobless veterans say military experience is not valued ? Do you really think so?

When Matthew Burrell left the U.S. Army after eight years of service, he landed a job as a public relations contractor in Iraq. With a salary of $170,000, he figured military experience had finally paid off.

But five months after returning home to Chicago, 33-year old Burrell is unemployed and said his job search has been strange. Despite having six years experience as a public relations officer in the Army, companies treat him as if he just graduated from college.

“I can tell you for a fact that definitely in my field in public relations and marketing, private sector companies do not value (military experience),” Burrell said.

Burrell feels he is more than qualified for a job in the corporate PR world. But Burrell, along with many of what the Department of Labor says are 235,000 unemployed veterans from the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, has run into a frustrating problem.

Many U.S. companies, and sometimes veterans themselves, do not know how to translate military experience into civilian job skills. There is a disconnect between companies demanding a college degree and veterans’ giving confusing descriptions of their military experience to civilian employers.

That disconnect has contributed to veterans having an unemployment rate 2.6 percent higher than the general population, according to September’s Bureau of Labor Statistics unemployment report. As U.S. involvement in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars winds down, lawmakers and organizations of all stripes have launched efforts to help veterans find work.

President Barack Obama this week announced measures, including $120 million in total tax breaks to companies that hire veterans.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce said it hopes to get 15,000 veterans hired through 100 job fairs around the country for veterans this year. One of those job fairs was held recently in Naperville, a Chicago suburb, giving 86 companies the chance to meet more than 600 veterans.

One problem is that veterans need to articulate more clearly to companies their experience, said Kevin Schmiegel, vice president of veteran’s employment programs at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

Hiring managers who have not served in the military are often bewildered by the jargon used by soldiers and weapons specialists, said Becky Brillon, who directs a program at the Community Career Center in Naperville.

A military job title might be listed like this: “25 Romeo visual and media equipment operator and maintainer.”

“If somebody was artillery, or a sharpshooter or a sniper, you have to tone that down in the civilian world. It’s more about being detail-oriented, precise and focused,” Brillon said.

EARN CREDIT FOR SKILLS

But on the other side of that coin, private employers should give more credit to the experience and skills veterans acquire in the military, Schmiegel said.

Veteran unemployment could fall dramatically if companies were willing to give jobs that normally require credentialing or a college diploma to veterans with military experience in the same role, Schmiegel said. He also said companies should offer training to veterans to help connect military experience to workplace skills.

Some military jobs, like a mechanic or technician, are more easily transferred to a private sector job than others.

David Berry served as a medic in the Army 25 years ago, but did not enter the private-sector medical field because of how much extra training he would need, he said.

Berry said he was performing a range of medical treatments in the military that would have required at least an associate college degree to get a similar job in the private sector.

“The private sector has its own set of rules and they don’t all correspond with what the military says,” Berry said. “I didn’t get anything from the military saying, ‘He’s qualified, and we back this person up for this position because he’s done this, this and that.’”

The credentials and certificates that the military does give out for certain forms of training still do not seem to carry much weight.

Rick Combs, a 27-year old who was a Sergeant in the Army, says he was given management training in the military as part of becoming a Sergeant. So far, that training has not translated into a comparable private-sector job.

“You can come in, and slap something down that says, ‘Here, the military says I can lead people. Give me a department and I will make it dance for you,’” Combs said. “I haven’t had the opportunity on the civilian side yet.”

Combs said he’s going back to school to become a network technician, an area he worked in for the Army.

Schmiegel, from the Chamber of Commerce, said something must be done for veterans to find jobs or the country’s voluntary armed forces will not find as many willing recruits.

“We are telling (recruits) right now that when they leave the service four years from now that they’re going to be better off. That they’re going to have a better job. That they’re going to be more marketable. And the fact is, right now they’re not,” Schmiegel said.

The Post-9/11 Veterans Education Assistance Improvements Act of 2010 was recently signed into law. This page lists changes to the GI Bill made by this law.

Effective August 1, 2009, But Not Payable Until October 1, 2011

Expands the Post-9/11 GI Bill to include Active Service performed by National Guard members under title 32 U.S.C. for the purpose of organizing, administering, recruiting, instructing, or training the National Guard; or under section 502(f) for the purpose of responding to a national emergency.

Effective March 5, 2011

Limits active duty members to the net cost for tuition and fees prorated based on the eligibility tiers (40%-100%) previously established for Veterans.

Same limitations apply to transferee spouses of active duty servicemembers

Effective August 1, 2011

For Veterans and their transferees – simplifies the tuition and fee rates for those attending a public school and creates a national maximum for those enrolled in a private or foreign school

Pays all public school in-state tuition and fees;

Private and foreign school costs are capped at $17,500 annually;

The Yellow Ribbon Program still exists for out-of-state fees and costs above the cap.

For Active Duty Members and their transferees – creates a national rate for those active duty members enrolled in a private or foreign school pursuing a degree

Pays all public school in-state tuition and fees;

Private and foreign school costs are capped at $17,500 annually

Allows VA to pay MGIB (chapter 30) and MGIB-SR (chapter 1606) ‘kickers’, or college fund payments, on a monthly basis instead of a lump sum at the beginning of the term

Prorates housing allowance by the student’s rate of pursuit (rounded to the nearest tenth)

A student training at a rate of pursuit of 75% would receive 80% of the BAH rate

Break or interval pay is no longer payable under any VA education benefit program unless under an Executive Order of the President or due to an emergency, such as a natural disaster or strike.

This means that when your semester ends (e.g. December 15th), your housing allowance is paid for the first 15 days of December only and begins again when your next semester begins (e.g. January 10th) and is paid for the remaining days of January.

Students using other VA education programs are included in this change. Monthly benefits will be pro-rated in the same manner.

Entitlement that previously would have been used for break pay will be available for use during a future enrollment.

Allows reimbursement for more than one “license or certification” test (previously only one test was allowed).

However, entitlement is now charged

Allows reimbursement of fees paid to take national exams used for admission to an institution of higher learning (e.g., SAT, ACT, GMAT, LSAT)

Allows those who are eligible for both Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment (chapter 31) benefits and Post-9/11 GI Bill (chapter 33) benefits to choose the Post-9/11 GI Bill’s monthly housing allowance instead of the chapter 31 subsistence allowance.

NOAA and PHS personnel are now eligible to transfer their entitlement to eligible dependents

Effective October 1, 2011

Allows students to use the Post-9/11 GI Bill for -

On-the-job and apprenticeship training: Pays a monthly benefit amount prorated based on time in program and up to $83 per month for books and supplies.

Flight programs: Per academic year, pays the actual net costs for in-state tuition and fees assessed by the school or $10,000, whichever is less.

Correspondence training: Per academic year, pays the actual net costs for in-state tuition and fees assessed by the school or $8,500, whichever is less.

Housing allowance is now payable to students (other than those on active duty) enrolled solely in distance learning. The housing allowance payable is equal to ½ the national average BAH for an E-5 with dependents.

The below information is of great value to ALL military personnel taking college courses and college administrators. If military personnel and schools are not aware of the below they cannot use its protections or comply with it.

On August 14, 2008, President George W. Bush signed into law the Higher Education Opportunity Act of 2008, Public Law 110-315. Section 487 of that Act accords the postsecondary education student whose education was interrupted by voluntary or involuntary military service the right to readmission to the educational program. These new requirements apply to any educational institution that participates in title IV federal student financial aid programs, including Pell Grants, Stafford Loans, and the Federal Work-Study Program.

This new law applies to the student who is a member of the National Guard or Reserve and who is called to active duty involuntarily or volunteers for an extended period of active duty. The law also applies to the student who starts an educational program (often part-time) while on active duty and who then must interrupt the educational program because of a deployment or a Permanent Change of Station (PCS). The law also applies to a student who interrupts his or her education to enlist in a regular component of the armed forces. Such a person is entitled, as a matter of federal law, to resume the educational program later, either during or after the person’s active duty service.

This new law went into effect on August 14, 2008 (the date of enactment) and is codified under 20 United States Code (U.S.C.)
FEDERAL LAW AND REGULATIONS - AND SOME STATES - PROTECT ACTIVE DUTY, GUARD, AND RESERVE MILITARY PERSONNEL WHO ARE ATTENDING POST SECONDARY EDUCATION SCHOOLS IF THEY HAVE TO MISS SCHOOL DUE TO MILITARY ORDERS

This applies to the student who is a member of the National Guard or Reserves and who is called to active duty involuntarily or volunteers for an extended period of active duty. It applies to the student who starts an educational program (often part-time) while on active duty and who then must interrupt the educational program because of a deployment or a Permanent Change of Station (PCS). It also applies to a student who interrupts his or her education to enlist in a regular component of the armed forces. Such a person is entitled, as a matter of federal law, to resume the educational program later, either during or after the person’s active duty service.

EXTRA NOTE – LOCAL STATE LAW MAY PROVIDE EVEN MORE RIGHTS AND PROECTION: Always check to see if the state your college is in has any laws on this subject and any school policies that may give one more rights and options. There may be instances where active military service due to its short duration (or how mobilized for National Guard personnel) does not receive the subject Federal education protection. In those cases in particular, one should check to see what laws the local state government has. Some states even give the service member the ability to sue the school for violating the state’s law. Here is a list of eighteen (18) states that are known to have such laws or written policies: Alabama, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Louisiana, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. If your state is not listed, double check anyway as the list may not be exhaustive. See also http://www.soc.aascu.org/socconsortium/PolicyLetters.html for a listing of some of these states’ laws and regulations.

Are you nervous about transitioning from active-duty service member to civilian? Advanced preparation can make all the difference. For example, did you know that you can prepare for your civilian career while on active duty from bases worldwide?

Select a military-friendly online school that allows you to put your military schedule first, and you can begin your civilian career with credentials that enhance your military background.

When you are ready to begin your civilian job search, knowing how to translate military jargon concerning your rank and duties is key – especially if you are going to convince a prospective employer that you are the right candidate for the job. The Transition Assistance Program (TAP) offers valuable guidance on how to accomplish this task. Here are some examples directly from the TAP Manual:

Translating Your Military Strengths

1. Leadership Training
The military trains people to accept responsibility and give direction. You may have had responsibility for other people and their activities. You are trained to lead by setting an example and by giving directions.

2. Ability to Conform to Rules and Structure
In any organization there must be rules and structure to avoid chaos. You have learned and followed rules in the service. Companies value employees who will follow the rules and fit into the structure of the workplace.

3. Ability to Learn with Advanced Training
You received intensive, and often specialized, advanced training in the service.

4. Familiarity with Records
You are familiar with the need for records and complete paperwork. You understand the need to be accountable for everything you do.

5. Ability to Work as a Team Member and a Team Leader
In the military you worked in a team environment. You understand that everything you do affects someone else. You may have served as a team leader where you analyzed
situations and options, made decisions, gave directions, followed through and
accepted responsibility.

6. Ability to Work in a Diverse Group
The military employs all Americans regardless of race, gender, economic status, religion. In the service, you have worked with people of all backgrounds, attitudes, and characteristics.

7. Ability to Work Under Pressure and Meet Deadlines
In the military you must perform. You do your job right the first time. There is pressure and stress; if you fail, people could suffer. This attitude toward work is valued in the business community.

8. Systematic Planning
Most military operations require thorough planning. You must consider objectives, the strengths and limitations of others, resources, time schedules, logistics, and various other factors. You also assess progress during the operations. The ability to plan is highly valued in many civilian job settings.

For the complete set of tips for translating your military strengths, consult the TAPS Manual on www.military.com.

The Army Correspondence Course Program (ACCP) is the formal nonresident extension of the United States Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) service schools’ curricula.

When completing Army Distance Learning Program (TADLP) course, module and subcourse examinations, students are required to submit their own work. Students who are suspected of cheating on examinations are subject to Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) Articles 107, 132, and 134.

DA Pamphlet 351-20, The Army Correspondence Course Program Catalog is a standard Army publication. The catalog lists all correspondence courses developed and administered by the Army and select Department of Defense activities. The Army Institute for Professional Development (AIPD) publishes a yearly revision of the catalog each October to update the ACCP curriculum and any procedural changes to the program. The entire ACCP curriculum and an electronic enrollment form are also listed at the Army Training Support Center’s Web site. The ACCP Catalog offers two types of study: individual and group.

AIPD’s automated student record system limits students to one course enrollment, or to one course enrollment and a subcourse enrollment, at any one time. But, this limitation applies only to the courses and subcourses administered by AIPD. Each subcourse is awarded a specific number of credit hours, noted in ACCP Catalog Chapter 3 at the individual subcourse descriptions and usually included on the title page of a subcourse. The number of credit hours for any given subcourse is based on the estimated time required for a student to read the material and complete all practice exercises and the examination. If a subcourse is assigned six credit hours, the author(s) of the subcourse probably timed someone as they read the entire subcourse, performed each practice exercise, then completed the examination. They then rounded this amount of time off to the nearest hour and awarded it as the credit hours for the subcourse.

Instructions:

1. Log-in for self-development subcourses or a course or a phase to a course.

2. Update your student information (ie. adddress, email, phone number, rank, etc).

3. Complete and submit your final examinations on-line.

4. View and print your active and history records.

5. View a list of current courses and subcourses.

6. Request Assistance.

Army Correspondence Courses Promotion Points

Award 4 points per week for completion of PLDC and BNCOC. PLDC equivalency; points will be awarded based on the active component duration and equivalency must be approved prior to awarding points. Only resident courses are authorized promotion points under this rule. Nonresident courses will be awarded points under correspondence course rules outlined below.

Soldiers completing Ranger School will be awarded 32 points and soldiers completing Special Forces Qualification Course will be awarded 60 points. When the Ranger School Course exceeds 8 weeks or the Special Forces Course exceeds 15 weeks, 4 points per week will be awarded. All phases of the course must be completed in order to receive promotion points under this provision.

The awarding of 4 points per week is authorized for battalion level or higher training that are at least 1 week in duration (40 hours is equivalent to 1 week). Courses conducted at company, battery, troop, and detachment level are not authorized promotion points. Training must be coordinated, consolidated, and conducted at battalion or higher level. Training will be annotated on a DA Form 87 (Certificate of Training), must have been completed during duty hours and funded by the military. DA Form 87 must be signed by a field grade officer serving in an LTC or higher position. Ordinary leave and permissive TDY are not considered as duty time. Civilian certificates of completion for military training are not authorized promotion points unless issued on a DA Form 87. Promotion points will not be awarded for duplicate military training. For example, soldier attends Combat Lifesaver Course and completes the Army Correspondence Course Program (ACCP) Combat Lifesaver Course, then he/she will only get points for one course, not both.

Soldiers in the United States Army can get a jumpstart on making their transition to the civilian workforce by requesting a transcript compiled by the Army/American Council on Education Registry Transcript System (AARTS).

Provided free of charge by request, the AAARTS is a computerized transcript system that generates official transcripts for qualified soldiers by combining military education and job experience with descriptions and college credit recommendations developed by the American Council on Education (ACE). The following information will be included on the transcript:

Soldier’s name and Social Security Number (SSN)

The Soldier’s present rank or highest rank reached while enlisted.

Military status (whether on active or inactive duty)

Additional Skill Identifiers (ASI) and Skill Qualification Identifiers (SQI)

A listing of all formal military courses completed

Any Military Occupational Specialties (MOS) held

Scores earned on standardized tests

In addition to saving both time and money, an AARTS transcript provides a description of military schooling and work history in civilian language that can be more easily understood by prospective employers. The transcript serves as a valuable tool which can be used by academic and career counselors in advising soldiers and veterans. It is also a highly effective aid in preparing resumes and translating Army-related work experience during a job interview.

Army/American Council on Education Registry Transcript System (AARTS) transcripts are available to veterans or active duty personnel who are serving or who have served after October 1, 1981. Requests will need your full name, Social Security Number, and dates of service.

If you are interested in obtaining an institutional copy of your AARTS transcript, you must complete a DA Form 5454-R.

You can fax your request to the AARTS Operations Center at 913.684.2011

Post Secondary School is a public institution which is state supported. Private for-profit institutions are businesses. Private not-for-profit institutions are independent – for instance, the school might have been established by a church or through local community donations rather than by the state government.

Four-year institutions offer bachelor’s degrees, and some offer advanced degrees. Two-year institutions offer associate’s degrees. Less-than-two-year institutions offer training and award certificates of completion. All these types of schools may offer online college classes to supplement campus programs.

Here’s a more detailed description of the kinds of Post Secondary schools you might hear about as you plan for your post-high-school education:

College – A four-year college grants bachelor’s degrees (Bachelor of Arts; Bachelor of Science). Some colleges also award master’s degrees.

University – A university grants bachelor’s and master’s degrees, and sometimes includes a professional school such as a law school or medical school. Universities tend to be larger than colleges, focus more on scholarly or scientific research, and might have larger class sizes.

Community college – A public two-year college granting associate’s degrees and sometimes certificates in particular technical (career-related) subjects. Some students start their postsecondary education at a community college and then transfer to a four-year school, either because a community college tends to be cheaper than a four-year college, or because admissions standards at community colleges are often less strenuous than at four-year schools.

Junior college – Similar to a community college, except that a junior college is usually a private school.

Online College - Similar to university or college, that is available to study in online, distance learning school.

Career school, technical school, or vocational/trade school – These terms are often used interchangeably. May be public or private, two-year or less-than-two-year. Career schools offer courses that are designed to prepare students for specific careers, from welding to cosmetology to medical imaging, etc. The difference between technical schools and trade schools is that technical schools teach the science behind the occupation, while trade schools focus on hands-on application of skills needed to do the job.
